This year’s theme “Through My Eyes,” encourages writers to share their individual feelings and experiences about how mental illness has affected them or touched their life. It offers an opportunity to raise understanding, nurture compassion, inspire change and end the stigma that often surrounds mental illness!
This Scholarship Contest is open to residents in the NAMI Fairfield catchment area including Fairfield, Westport, Norwalk, Wilton, Weston, Easton, Bridgeport, Stratford, Trumbull and Newtown. This contest is open to anyone from 3rd grade through age 101. Cash and prizes will be awarded in four categories:
Elementary - Grades 3-5
Middle School Grades 6 -8
High School - Grades 9-12
Adult - Ages 18+
NAMI Fairfield seeks to challenge the stigma of mental illness through education and social awareness. We hope that this essay contest will encourage and inspire people of all ages to express their feelings about and support for people with mental illness.

Founded in 1979, NAMI has become the nation’s voice on mental illness. A national organization made up of NAMI affiliates in every state and in over 1100 local communities across the country, volunteers join together to meet the NAMI mission through support, education, advocacy, and research.
NAMI promotes SUPPORT for individuals living with mental illness and their families; EDUCATION to raise awareness about mental illness and to eliminate the stigma often associated with these biological brain disorders; ADVOCACY at state, national, and local levels to raise funding for non-discriminatory and equitable treatment, and services for individuals with mental illness in the public and private sectors; RESEARCH into the causes, symptoms and treatment of mental illness.
NAMI is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the quality of life of all whose lives are affected by these diseases.
